Industry NewsGensource backs Scottish golfer Matty Wilson in first professional sport sponsorship
Musselburgh-headquartered sustainable energy specialist Gensource has entered professional sport sponsorship for the first time, agreeing a deal to back Scottish golfer Matty Wilson for the 2026 season, as reported by Deadline News, in a partnership that carries a distinctive dual commercial and employment dimension.
Wilson, 26, currently competes on the Tartan Pro Tour and is the younger brother of Gensource co-founder Robert Wilson, himself a scratch golfer. The family connection runs deep, with both brothers developing their game at Horsforth Golf Club in Leeds before the family relocated to Moray in the north of Scotland 12 years ago.
The deal extends an existing working relationship. During the Scottish golf off-season, Wilson has been employed by Gensource as a qualified renewables installer, working within one of the company's in-house installation teams on solar panel projects. The arrangement has provided the business with additional capacity during the winter months when daylight hours are shorter and weather conditions slow output.
Robert Wilson, who co-founded Gensource with Josh King in December 2022 with the aim of providing turnkey sustainable energy solutions, said the sponsorship was a natural evolution of that relationship. "For the past couple of winters when the Scottish golf season has finished, Matty has been employed by Gensource as a renewables installer, working in one of our in-house installation teams," he said. "This has been a great fit for both parties, with the timing of the Scottish golf season meaning he can provide additional capacity to our installation teams when daylight hours are low and poor weather often slows our works."
Robert added that reaching a position where the company could sponsor his brother was a milestone for both the family and the business. "It feels incredible to have now built the company in a short space of time into a position where sponsorship of my brother is possible," he said. "I'd like to thank my fellow directors for being on board with supporting him not only as a Gensource employee, but as a professional golfer."
Matty Wilson said working in the renewables sector had given him a practical foundation that informed both his off-season employment and his connection to the business. "Working on the tools with my dad helped give me a grounding in the construction/renewables sectors," he said. "Robert and the team have done a brilliant job in building up the business and I'm really appreciative of their support."
