Barratt David Wilson Homes has backed this year’s Gillingham Carnival as headline sponsor, placing the housebuilder at a long-running, volunteer-run town event in the Dorset town where it is building new homes at its Kings Court and Romans Quarter developments. The carnival, organised by the Gillingham Carnival Committee, marks the end of a week-long celebration and has been a staple of the town since 1949.

This year’s event, held on Saturday 10 October, features a children’s procession and a grand illuminated procession through the high street, alongside a band parade, funfair, duck race and steam cavalcade. Volunteers raise funds throughout the year to ensure it goes ahead.

Barratt and David Wilson Homes are housebuilding brands of Barratt Redrow plc, the UK’s largest housebuilder, which delivered 17,667 homes in the 52 weeks to 28 June 2026. Its Southampton division is developing new homes across Dorset, including at two sites in Gillingham.

The Gillingham Carnival Committee is an independent voluntary group in Gillingham, Dorset, which raises funds through events, donations and street collections to finance the annual carnival processions. The 2026 carnival is organised with Gillingham Scout Group, and entrants spend the summer building illuminated carts and costumes for the evening procession.

Megan Hamlyn, marketing manager at Barratt David Wilson Homes’ Southampton division, said: “We are proud to sponsor Gillingham Carnival.” She added that events like this bring communities together and that the company is thrilled to support such an important tradition for the town.

The sponsorship continues an existing relationship: the carnival committee’s 2026 programme lists David Wilson Homes as main sponsor, and its 2025 results page names the same sponsor.

The carnival traces regular editions to 1949, following a first hospital carnival in 1907, according to Blackmore Vale, and is billed there as the biggest children’s carnival in the area.

It is the latest community event sponsorship of this kind by the housebuilder, following its backing of the 150th Driffield Show in East Yorkshire, according to Yahoo News UK.

For the sector, the pattern shows a national housebuilder using local carnival and show sponsorships in towns with live developments to build community standing close to its sales sites.
